Fake Tax Refunds – Scam Emails

10/11/2009

There are an alarming number of scam emails being sent to individuals claiming that they are due a tax refund and asking them to provide their debit/credit card details to arrange for the refund to be sent to their specified account.

A number of ASE Plc clients have already been targeted by these scam emails and H M Revenue and Customs (HMRC) have advised that 83,000 such emails were reported to them in September, with 10,000 reported in one day alone!

Please be aware, that HMRC never email a taxpayer asking them to provide their bank details.

If you do receive an email from somewhere that purports to be HMRC, H M Treasury or any other source, please forward it to the following address phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk and then delete it from your mail box.
