Coronavirus Update – Job Support Scheme (JSS)

Article Date: 21 October 2020

HMRC recently announced a JSS to take effect from 1 November that, when they announced it, most of the population took little notice in the hope that the support would not be required.

Unfortunately, the scheme is now required.

The link to the scheme is set out below;

The essence of the scheme is that it offers a business support (for up to 6 months) to meet the cost of employee wages and costs where the business has been instructed to close and cease work by one or more of the four governments of the UK.

Welsh businesses will be able to claim with effect from 1 November as a lockdown is called for 17 days from 23 October to 9 November.

Employees will be eligible to claim up to 2/3 of their normal pay (up to a £2,100 limit).

Employees cannot be made redundant or put on notice of redundancy during the claim period.

The employer will remain liable for employer NIC and pension contributions.

Comment

These are difficult times and confusing times.

Any form of support is therefore welcome. One can only wonder whether Wales first, and the rest of the UK next?
