From 1 January 2021 if you move goods between Great Britain and the EU you will need an EORI number beginning with the prefix GB to quote to the authorities.
The application process is quick and easy and full details can be found here https://www.gov.uk/eori
If you’re not sure if you already have a number or if you don’t know if your existing number has the GB prefix there is also a link to contact the EORI team directly.
I would particularly like to highlight the impact of these rules for Northern Ireland dealers. If you will be moving goods to or from Northern Ireland you will need to have a GB prefixed EORI but in mid-December will be issued with a new number beginning with XI. HMRC have said that businesses without an existing number should apply before 23rd November to ensure they receive their new number in time.
We will be issuing further guidance in the coming weeks on how Brexit will affect overseas transactions for all dealers, but in particular those based in Northern Ireland.
